The Best Free Audio Production Software - Software Studio:
Audio production software for mastering, mixing, and music composing:
multi-platform software studio
MilkyTracker is an free open source, multi-platform software studio / DAW -currently the only free tracker available for Pocket PC's running on the Windows Mobile platform! MilkyTracker is in essence a modern remake of the legendary Fasttracker II. It saves and loads both .xm and .mod files and loads more than 30 different classic mod-files. The MilkyTracker software studio features low latency audio driver support, MIDI In support and rendering of songs or patterns to wav-files. On top of this MilkyTracker features a sample editor perfect for making your own 8-bit drum sounds. Sadly MilkyTracker does not support VST-plugins.
Software Studio Made Easy
Psycle is an open source modular software studio / DAW with an oldskool tracker (64 tracks) and a sequencer (256 positions). Psycle has a 24-bit internal sampling rate, imports wav, xm, s3m, it, and mod files (but not mp3 and ogg), and it can render / export to wav files. The software studio features ASIO and VST-2 support, 70+ native plugins, and a well written manual. The setup is very easy, but be careful not to point Psycle to a directory with too many VST's at the same time. Psycle will crash when it encounters a VST it doesn't support. The Psycle Software studio is still very much a work in progress, but if you're just getting started with tracking, this might be the right solution for you.
Other Free Software Studios / DAWs:
The following programs might also be worth investigating if you are looking for a free Software Studio:
ModPlug Tracker is a free open source tracker that features MIDI, ASIO, wav-file rendering, and has a rudimentary VST support. It loads and saves several file formats including 16-bit wav, it, mod, s3m, and xm.
Aodix is a tracker based audio sequencer with 32-bit internal sample rate, ASIO and VST support. It was a very promising project, but sadly the developer, Arguru, has passed away, so there will be no more updates to the current version...
GoatTracker by Loorni is an open source crossplatform tracker for creating Commodore 64 music using the reSID engine to emulate the sound of the famous MOS6581 SID chip. GoatTracker is quite primitive, compared with other freeware trackers, but it definitely has some of that old C64 feeling to it. If you are into making chip tunes, you should really give it a spin. No VST support though...
SVAr Tracker is a basic tracker. It is supposed to support VST's, but it doesn't load certain plugins correctly and often it forgets the preset it was playing -reverting to playing the default preset...
Rax'n'Trax and Darkwave Studio are some other attempts to build a free software studio / audio sequencer, but they both need a lot of work! Just getting them to play a VST plugin is very hard indeed, and since they both lack decent documentation, they are simply not worth the energy.
